Protesters tell Norristown officials not to bus homeless out of town

Disturbed by reports that people in homeless encampments might be swept out of their tents and bused out of town, a small group of protesters gathered at a borough council meeting Tuesday night to voice their dissent.

Some of them, subdued but pointed, were critical of Council President Thomas Lepera, who has told people he planned to bus individuals living homeless to Villanova University.

‘My country is in trouble’: Central Pa. volunteers fighting targeted violence share their stories

Three central Pennsylvania residents who volunteered to serve in a federal program aimed at addressing violence targeted at vulnerable populations and others, say the experience has been a  lesson in “the ABCs of constructive dialogue.”

Twenty-eight people from across Adams, Dauphin, Franklin and York counties, began serving in the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security’s program known as Uniting to Prevent Targeted Violence in South-Central Pennsylvania, according to founder and executive director Joseph Bubman, last month. Each county will have $10,000 in program funds to support their efforts, drawn from a two-year project budget of $770,000.

Religious leaders call for stricter gun laws in Pennsylvania

The number of shootings, gun murders, and suicides using firearms is rising across the country.

Mass shootings are commonplace in the U.S. and although they get most of the attention, they don’t happen nearly as often as a shooting on the street or in a home. Philadelphia and other large cities are setting records for gun deaths but here in Central Pennsylvania, not a week goes by that we don’t hear of a shooting nearby.

‘Like a warzone’: Turks in central Pa. implore community to help with earthquake relief

Turks living in central Pennsylvania are left feeling like any help they give can never be enough after two large earthquakes devastated the eastern region of Turkey on Monday.

“As soon as I heard it on the news, I called up my families—they live close to the center of the earthquake,” Ali Ozdogan, a 50-year-old Harrisburg resident, said. “I found they were safe.”

Child poverty on the decline, but elderly poverty on the rise in Pennsylvania

In recent years, Pennsylvania has seen a divide in poverty among its population, with a decline in child poverty rates in nearly two dozen counties, but an increase in elderly poverty rates in almost a dozen counties.

According to data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey 5-year estimates, the child poverty rate in the state dropped from 21% in 2012-2016 to 17% in 2017-2021, though it remains higher than the overall poverty rate of 12.6%.

The Central Bucks School District’s indefensible treatment of LGBTQ students | Editorial

The Central Bucks School District is one of the wealthiest school systems in Pennsylvania. That will come in handy since the district is paying a lawyer $940 an hour to defend a federal complaint of its own making.

Whether any school district lawyer is worth nearly $1,000 an hour is a separate matter. The bigger issue is how Central Bucks is wasting taxpayers’ money because of the hostile environment that the complaint charges it has created for LGBTQ students.

Pennsylvania parents plead guilty in child’s overdose death

Pittsburgh (AP) — The parents of a 1-year-old western Pennsylvania boy who authorities said died after he was intentionally “dosed with methadone” have pleaded guilty to third-degree murder.

Tracy Humphreys and Thomas Snelsire, both 47-year-old Baldwin residents, face standard-range prison terms of 16 to 20 years due to their criminal records when they are sentenced in Allegheny County court on Jan. 11, the Tribune-Review reported.

58 children died from abuse last year, according to PA Department of Human Services

Harrisburg, Pa.— A newly-released report showed 58 children died from abuse last year, including 18 who died from violent deaths.

In releasing its annual Child Protective Services Report this week, the state Department of Human Services also showed that 52% (30) of those 58 deaths were caused through “lack of supervision.” Another 18 deaths, or 31%, were caused by “violent acts.”

Meth lab explosion at central Pa. apartment injures man, firefighter: police

Patients awaiting organ transplants can leave troubled central Pa. program, but keep waiting list spot

in Community/Health/People

People who were awaiting kidney or liver transplants from Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center can switch to a different transplant program without losing their time spent on the waiting list. Many have turned to the nearby kidney transplant program at UPMC Harrisburg Hospital.

Penn State Health’s kidney and liver transplant program has been inactive since April as it addresses assorted problems and implements plans for correction required by federal and state agencies.
