Central Pennsylvania Orchid Society’s annual show set to return to Penn State’s campus

After several years’ absence, the Central Pennsylvania Orchid Society has announced that its 55th Annual Orchid Show is coming back to its normal venue, the Snider Agricultural Arena on Penn State’s campus.

The Snider Ag Arena is located at the corner of Park Avenue and Fox Hollow Road, diagonally across from Beaver Stadium, and the event will be held from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, March 25 and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, March 26. There will be a special photographer’s hour on Sunday from 9-10 a.m. There will be workshops on repotting of orchid plants from 3-4 p.m. on Saturday and 2-3 p.m. on Sunday. Organizers are expecting many blooming orchids at the show.

They’re rubber remnants of worn-out truck tires, ready to be repurposed into flooring products. Every night, seven or eight truckloads of the recycled rubber nubs are dumped into bins, sorted by size.

A solar eclipse happens when the moon crosses between the sun and the Earth and casts a shadow.

Most of North America will see at least a portion of the eclipse.

The path of totality, where 100% of the eclipse is viewed, passes through Mexico, the U.S., and southeastern Canada.

PA schools could soon be powered by sun as solar bill advances to Senate

Bipartisan legislation that proposes the installation of solar panels in schools across Pennsylvania awaits a vote in the state Senate.

The Solar for Schools bill aims to combat climate change and invest in education. Fewer than 2% of Pennsylvania’s nearly 7,000 schools are powered by solar energy.

Mick Iskric is superintendent of Steelton-Highspire School District, which has a 42-acre urban school campus that serves more than 1,300 students from low-income families. He explained that, after partnering with McClure Company to install solar panels, the district now sees a monthly credit on its electric bill.

Pa. Red Cross volunteers train for disasters, which are increasing with climate change

Red Cross volunteers are preparing to offer emergency shelter to people who might be displaced by disaster.

Disaster program manager Melinda Rosario said the most common disasters in Pennsylvania are house fires and floods. Severe storms and flooding events are expected to increase in the state as global temperatures rise.

Rosario said the changing environment means volunteers can be called up any time.

Drought watch remains in effect for most Central Pennsylvania counties

The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) announced today, after a meeting of the Commonwealth Drought Task Force, that six counties will return to normal, with 15 counties in drought watch or drought warning.

Drought watch has been lifted for Berks, Chester, Clarion, Fayette, Lehigh, and Venango counties.

Central Pennsylvania Episcopal church installs solar panels to save money, care for creation

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in rural Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, is installing 52 solar panels with the goal to save at least $4,000 a year in electricity costs, which church leaders hope will help the congregation meet the growing challenge of balancing its budget while continuing to support charitable ministries.

“If this array provides our electric electrical needs, it should really reduce our costs and [carbon dioxide] production,” Maggie Chappen, senior warden, told Episcopal News Service.

Report: Central PA is eighth most polluted area in United States

Central Pennsylvania is the eighth most air polluted area in the U.S., according to the Guardian.

The Guardian is a newspaper based in Britain that describes itself as the world’s leading liberal voice.

Carlisle is among many densely populated areas in central Pennsylvania that the U.S. Census Bureau identifies as air pollution hotspots. Others are Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon and York.

Wildfire smoke returns to Pennsylvania, Code Red air quality alert issued

Another round of smoky, hazy skies has returned to the state. But it will not be as bad as it was earlier this month. An air quality alert has been issued for the region until 8 a.m. Thursday.

The smoke has caused the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to issue a Code Red for all of Central Pennsylvania. A Code Red means air pollution may be unhealthy for some members of the general public and that members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects.

The Susquehanna Valley and other parts of Pennsylvania are now under a Code Orange air quality alert for ozone through midnight Sunday.

Air quality in central Pa. turns dangerous, with smoke from Canadian wildfires contributing

A burn ban for all of Lebanon County will start Thursday as dry conditions continue with little rain in this week’s forecast.

Lebanon County commissioners Tuesday morning signed a resolution for a 30-day burn ban to be put in place starting 12 p.m. June 8. Commissioners cited severe dry conditions that will remain for the foreseeable future, resulting in “a much higher potential for wildfires.”

Pa. mountain fire spreads to at least 100 acres, officials say

A fire that broke out on state forest lands on Shade Mountain in Snyder County Friday morning is continuing to spread Saturday despite firefighters’ efforts to contain it, Pennsylvania officials say.

At least 10 different volunteer fire companies are on the mountain, using bulldozers to punch down fire lines and a helicopter to fight the flames, according to John Portzline, a representative of the Department of the Conservation of Natural Resources.
