Central Pennsylvania colleges react to Supreme Court overturning Affirmative Action

After four decades of legal precedent, the Supreme Court ruled that colleges can no longer use affirmative action. The vote split was 6-3 with conservative justices all ruling against the policy.

“Regardless of my feelings or anyone else’s feelings about the decision, it is the law of the land,” said John Jones, the president of Dickinson College.

Wildfire smoke returns to Pennsylvania, Code Red air quality alert issued

Another round of smoky, hazy skies has returned to the state. But it will not be as bad as it was earlier this month. An air quality alert has been issued for the region until 8 a.m. Thursday.

The smoke has caused the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to issue a Code Red for all of Central Pennsylvania. A Code Red means air pollution may be unhealthy for some members of the general public and that members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects.

A break from the rain and humidity in south-central Pennsylvania

We’ll get a small window of sunshine this morning, before clouds gradually increase, as a disturbance moves across the Northeast. A stray shower is possible north of the PA Turnpike this afternoon.

It’s a little sticky now, but it will feel more comfortable later today, as dew points drop to the upper 50s. Highs will reach 78 degrees, and we’ll see clearing toward evening.

Volunteers pack 100,000 meals for veterans in Central Pa.

It was a lively afternoon at Giant Center in Derry Township, Dauphin County as about 500 Giant food stores volunteers filed into three big tents full of food ready to be packaged and delivered to families in need.

‘It’s the right thing to do’: Meet the Pa. business owners pushing for a minimum wage hike

In 2019, when the Republican-controlled state Senate voted to raise Pennsylvania’s minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $9.50 an hour, John Schall, owner of El Jefe’s Taqueria, was one of the loudest vocal supporters of the potential wage hike.

“I think this is an important issue for businesses as well as for workers,” said Schall, who has Pennsylvania locations in Pittsburgh, State College and Bethlehem. “The Pennsylvania economy would be way better off if the legislation gets passed.”

According to a release, the app will allow users to find places to stay and “star” their favorite artists, food options, live entertainment and activities. Users will be able to build their schedule and follow their planned route using the app’s map feature.

Central Pennsylvania Humane Society struggles to care for large number of ‘pandemic pets’

Filled with the barks of more than 50 dogs, the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society in Altoona is over its capacity. That’s causing strain on the animals and staff of the no-kill shelter, manager Dylan Kotrick said.

Kotrick said the shelter’s capacity is 50 dogs, though 30-40 provides more adequate space and attention for each canine. Currently, there are 54 dogs housed on site, and some are living in outdoor cages.

1 trooper killed, 1 critically wounded in central Pennsylvania

Officials are expressing shock and sadness at the death of one state trooper and the critical wounding of another hours apart in central Pennsylvania over the weekend.

Police in Juniata County said a man engaged troopers at about 12:45 p.m. Saturday near the Lewistown barracks and shot one trooper, who was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Authorities found the man shortly before 3 p.m. several miles away in Walker Township, and a gun battle ensued that killed the shooter and a trooper, police said.
