Ninja’s popularity in Central Pennsylvania mirrors growth across the country

 Lucas Pyne looks around Urban Playground in Harrisburg and reflects on how far he’s come in the Ninja Program.

“I remember when I was younger, I could barely do a lot of these things.  When I first started, I didn’t try as much.  I tried some things like going up that wall,” recalled Pyne.

His experience is like anyone who ventures into a new sport, and what he does usually takes some explaining.

Long wait officially over following ribbon cutting for central Pa. thruway

NORTHUMBERLAND – It was a long time coming was a common theme Wednesday when officials cut the ribbon on the northern section of the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway (CSVT) and marked the start of construction on the southern section.

Approximately 200 invited federal, state and local officials along with representative of contractors and engineering firms attended the ceremony.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation held the event on the new limited-access highway in Northumberland County with the 4,545-foot-long bridge over the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in the background.

Route 30, I-81 and other highways in central Pa. could be improved under infrastructure bill

Route 30 in York County could get a fresh makeover after years of wear and tear.

Interstate 81 in Franklin County could get a new interchange south of Chambersburg.

And, in Lebanon County, Lingle Road, which is near a school, could be realigned and a nearby stream relocated to stop the flooding of the roadway.

These are some of the projects that money from the recently passed $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill could help to pay for in central Pennsylvania, according to the state Department of Transportation. President Joe Biden is expected to sign the bill into law on Monday.

COVID has video visits booming at Lebanon’s VA Medical Center

A nationwide program launched three years ago to benefit veterans with travel restrictions or limited access to VA hospitals is unexpectedly paying off for all south-central Pennsylvania vets needing medical care.

COVID-19 was unheard of in 2017 when the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs launched VA Video Connect to let Veterans and their caregivers use computers and internet connected devices to remotely video link to VA health care providers.

But when the novel coronavirus made in-person interactions unsafe this spring, use of the video service exploded, at the Lebanon Veterans Administration Medical Center and nationwide.

The local VA hospital has announced that Video Connect visits were up 782% between March 1 and June 30. According to a recent press release, “During the 4-month period, over 6,000 telehealth appointments were conducted to help our Veterans stay safe!”

PPL invests $9,500 in Focus Central Pennsylvania

PPL Electric Utilities have given a $9,500 check to Focus Central Pennsylvania to support the team’s goal of driving economic development in Centre, Columbia, Montour, Northumberland, Union, Snyder, and Mifflin Counties. The check was presented by PPL’s Regional Affairs Director, Tracie Witter, to Focus Central Pennsylvania’s Executive Director, Lauren Bryson.

The contribution includes funds to support the organization’s annual marketing initiatives as well as a grant to fund a Smart Capacity initiative. The initiative supports a comprehensive business attraction partnership to leverage existing resources and efforts to effectively promote new corporate investments and career-creating location decisions in Central Pennsylvania.

Construction has been going on in communities like Walden and Arcona for years. While construction has begun in the last year or so for a number of other large developments.

400 Trees Planted on Pennsylvania Farm to Restore Waterways

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — Volunteers and staff from Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative, Turkey Hill Dairy and the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay joined forces in early November to plant 400 trees on a Pennsylvania dairy farm.

The volunteer crew planted saplings along a stream on the Lancaster County dairy farm as part of the Turkey Hill Clean Water Partnership, a joint effort with Maryland & Virginia dairy farmers supplying Turkey Hill, Turkey Hill Dairy and the Alliance. The buffer project will enable the farmer to stabilize the stream bank on his property and in turn protect local waterways feeding into the Chesapeake Bay.
