Central Pa. pastor, wife on edge as Russia invades their homeland

SHAMOKIN, Pa. — Transfiguration Ukrainian Church Pastor Mykola Ivanov and his wife Anna are consumed with emotions as they monitor the Russian invasion of the Shamokin residents’ homeland.

The news reports include images and sounds of missiles flying and exploding, tanks driving on familiar streets and Ukrainians crying.

However, for the Ivanovs, no sound is more important at this time than the familiar “ping” sound of a text message arriving from their parents and siblings who are all in the middle of the attack that began Thursday in Lviv, Ukraine, Mykola said.

Child Charged With Arson In Pennsylvania Walmart Fire: Report

A child has been charged with arson for setting fire to a toy at a central Pennsylvania Walmart, PennLive reports citing Pennsylvania state police trooper Megan Ammerman.

The fire broke out at the Walmart located on 60 Noble Road in Carlisle around 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 16, authorities said at the time.

Now a new owner is taking over operations. The Funck Restaurant Group recently purchased the restaurants at 800 Mount Gretna Road in Elizabethtown and at 896 W. Grantham Road in Monroe Township, according to NAI CIR, a commercial realty group in Lemoyne.

WOODLAND, Calif. (AP) — For a few frenzied weeks, beekeepers from around the United States truck billions of honeybees to California to rent them to almond growers who need the insects to pollinate the state’s most valuable crop.

But as almond trees start to bloom, blanketing entire valleys in white and pink flowers, so begin beehive thefts that have become so prevalent that beekeepers are now turning to GPS tracking devices, surveillance cameras and other anti-theft technology to protect their precious colonies.

Police warn of scam targeting elderly in Central Pa.

Pennsylvania state troopers are warning residents of a scam that is continuing to target the elderly.

In this scam, victims receive a phone call from someone claiming that the victim’s loved one is in trouble, and money is required to help them. A scam similar in nature was reported in Cambria County earlier in February, where an 89-year-old woman lost $23,000.

Some Pa. cannabis companies use misleading, inaccurate, or dangerous statements to promote marijuana for addiction treatment

Harrisburg, Pa. — Some Pennsylvania cannabis companies are using incomplete or misleading claims to promote marijuana as a treatment for opioid addiction, potentially putting patients’ lives at greater risk, a Spotlight PA investigation has found.

In a first-of-its-kind review, Spotlight PA examined more than 60 websites offering services in Pennsylvania and consulted numerous health policy experts about the validity of the claims.

In some instances where medical research was cited on a website or by a company official, the news organization directly contacted study authors.

Rise of contagious bird virus HPAI poses threat to poultry farmers

Harrisburg, Pa. – The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal Health and Plant Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed findings of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in birds within the United States. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture reminds Pennsylvanians to stay vigilant and review biosecurity practices.

HPAI is very contagious and can make wild and domesticated birds very sick or lead to death. Bird owners should step up biosecurity efforts to protect their flock and Pennsylvania’s $7.1 billion poultry industry at large.

Local organizations ‘share the love,’ collect essentials for people in need

HARRISBURG, Pa. — A local organization spent February collecting essentials to make vegan-friendly winter care packages for those in need.

Animal Advocates of South Central Pennsylvania teamed up with homeless support group “Food Not Bombs” for their Valentine’s Day inspired “Share the Love” essentials drive.

All month the groups have been collecting vegan friendly food and other necessities for people in need.

Up to 50 mph winds and rain could put a huge damper on an otherwise unusually warm February week in central Pennsylvania, according to forecasters.

The week has started out uneventful, weather-wise, and will likely remain that way Wednesday. The National Weather Service is calling for sunny skies and about 50-degree highs.

Grand jury investigating 1986 disappearance of 2-year-old boy from his central Pa. home

Water Main Break Affects Service in Downtown State College

A water main break is impacting service in downtown State College on Monday afternoon.

According to a release from the borough, the break occurred on Humes Alley between East Calder Way and East Beaver Avenue.

State College Borough Water Authority crews were on the scene as of 2:30 p.m. and shut off water in the area to repair the break.
