Anti-littering coalition encourages Pennsylvanians to ‘fight dirty’

in Community/Environment/Local/Pennsylvania

Harrisburg, Pa. — Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful and state officials from PennDOT have launched a new anti-litter campaign, “PA Fights Dirty: Every Litter Bit Matters.”

Though cleaning up litter is important, the campaign is aiming at the root of the problem: people’s behavior. If nobody ever litters, nobody will ever need to clean up litter.

“Every Litter Bit Matters” calls upon Pennsylvanians to ensure every piece of their trash, regardless of size, is disposed of properly. The campaign is based in part on polling which determined that only three percent of Pennsylvanians approve of littering, yet nearly half actually litter. This includes “situational littering,” where someone may leave trash next to a full can or leave behind trash in a sports stadium.

Making a stand for seasonal farmers markets

in Event/Local/Pennsylvania

(JNS) At the top of my summer list of small pleasures is discovering farmers markets. Popping up at roadsides all across the country — from California to New York — baskets of produce brim with color and the clean flavors of being freshly harvested. You’ll also find seasonal produce at indoor markets where local farmers bring homegrown fruits, vegetables, jams, chutneys and fresh-baked goods to sell at booths. To jaded taste buds, there’s nothing quite like it. Best of all, for the kosher cook and eater, the selections are nearly unlimited, though check jars and packages for hechshers before buying.

York trailed early as Travieso worked two clean innings to start the game before allowing a solo home run to Scott Burcham that just barely got out, hitting the top of the left center field wall and bouncing over for a 1-0 Dirty Birds lead in the top of the third.
