How anti-LGBTQ groups can cost public schools millions

Twenty years ago, families in the Dover School District, located in York County, filed a lawsuit and defeated an effort to teach creationism in their children’s schools.

Now, in 2024, families in this same community are bracing for a similar fight after the school district approved a contract with the Independence Law Center, the legal arm of an extremist anti-LGBTQ organization.

PA Secretary of Education visits Robb Elementary, CTC

Dr. Mumin, who has served in various capacities as a teacher, dean of students, principal and administator is touring schools across the Commonwealth to assess the needs of students and educators and see the impact of state educational investments.

“I get out to be able to tell the story around what the impact of the investments will look like,” said Mumin, who received a warm welcome from Robb Elementary School students who lined the halls to give him and other administrators high fives.

Heavy thunderstorms, power outages hit central Pa. Wednesday morning

Loud thunderstorms with heavy rain and lightning crossed central Pennsylvania early this morning, and power outages have been reported.PennLive.com

The National Weather Service in State College said the storms are starting to wind down as of 5:30 a.m. Affected areas include Perry, Lancaster, York, Adams, Cumberland, Lebanon and Dauphin counties.

The two-engine, eight-seat Beechcraft King Air 350i took off from a small regional airport across the Susquehanna River from Pennsylvania’s state capital at 3:22 p.m. on Aug. 17.

After a two-hour flight, it arrived at Hilton Head Island in South Carolina, a ritzy vacation spot known for beaches and golf courses, to meet its passenger — Gov. Josh Shapiro.

Bill to boost funding for minority-owned businesses passes Pa. House

Pennsylvania’s minority-owned businesses may soon secure the capital needed to grow and remain competitive. 

Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives passed House Bill 2202 to create funding to provide low-interest loans and equity financing for eligible enterprises. Introduced by state Rep. Scott Conklin, D-Centre County, the bill advances to the state Senate for consideration.

Rita’s opening another stop in south-central Pa.

A pilot program in York graduated its second class of energy efficiency workers, who may help fill a growing need.

Pennsylvania’s energy efficiency workforce could grow from about 75,000 jobs now to 200,000, according to a study from the University of Massachusetts Amherst that looked at the possible impact of federal climate investments from the Inflation Reduction Act on job growth.

16-y-o J’can killed in alleged racial bullying incident in Pennsylvania

A Jamaican family in Pennsylvania is mourning the death of their 16-year-old son after a reported hazing incident with alleged racial undertones that has shaken the community.

Justin Johnson, a sophomore at Central Dauphin High School, who moved to the district two years ago from Jamaica, died following an incident involving three young men, who reportedly showed up at his home and invited him to go outside to play.

Central Pa. man found guilty of assaulting officers during Jan. 6 attack

A Cumberland County man was found guilty last week of assaulting law enforcement and multiple other charges related to his involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Joseph Pastucci, 50, of New Cumberland, was convicted of three felony offenses, including obstruction of an official proceeding, civil disorder, and assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers, along with eight misdemeanor charges.

Central Pa. woman dies from injuries sustained in March crash: coroner

A 72-year-old woman who was hit head-on in a car crash last month died of her injuries 29 days after the collision, according to the York County Coroner’s Office.

Nancy Hoover, 72, of York City, was pronounced dead on April 25 at Wellspan York Hospital, according to a report from the coroner’s office.

Bird flu spreads among cows across 8 states; experts say Pennsylvania’s risk is low

The Food and Drug Administration said on Wednesday that traces of the bird flu virus (H5N1) have been found in pasteurized milk.

While some samples of pasteurized milk have come back positive for remnants of bird flu, the agency says the virus is not harmful to people.

Central Pennsylvania receiving $4.2 million for crosswalk, trail improvements

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced Thursday that more than $49.5 million has been invested in 55 projects to improve community resources and public accessibility in the state.

Funds are made available through the Surface Transportation Block Grant program Set-Aside, also known as the Transportation Alternative Set-Aside (TA Set-Aside). The administration has been awarding projects that improve the accessibility of biking and walking paths, community improvement activities, mitigation and trails.
