Iowa wrestling’s Central PA flair hopes to flip the script on Penn State

No. 2 Penn State wrestling will take on No. 1 Iowa Friday night in Iowa City.

Half of Iowa’s projected starting lineup is from Pennsylvania – including two wrestlers from Central PA.

Former Central Cambria wrestler Max Murin and Punxsutawney wrestler Kaleb Young look to help Iowa take down Penn State.

A sold-out crowd decked out in evening wear – or their best band attire – filled the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg to celebrate local music and musicians at The Central Pennsylvania Music Awards.

“This is our first year, our first run at things,” said Brandon Valentine, founder and president of the Central Pennsylvania Music Hall of Fame. “The event itself is kind of two-fold. The first is the Central Pennsylvania Music Awards, which is local artists that are performing now. Better said, it’s the best of 2019 from our area. Then the other phase of it would be the actual Hall of Fame, which would be to induct the best of all time from our area.”

Central PA Outdoor & Sports Show to Return in March

CLEARFIELD –   The Central PA Outdoor & Sports Show will return to the Clearfield County Fairgrounds on March 20-22, 2020.

The three-day show has expanded this year to add new programs and attractions, and will occupy both the Expo I and Expo II buildings.

This year, the “Take’m Out Coyote Hunt is being organized to coincide with the show, and Whitetails Unlimited will occupy Expo I with numerous displays and a banquet to be held Saturday evening (March 21).

A slate of new presenters this year include Brad Lockwood of Outdoor Edge’s Love of the Hunt TV and local popular predator hunter, Jerry Lannen.  Both Lockwood and Lannen will present seminars throughout the weekend.

FBI offering $25,000 reward for information leading to arrest of Central Pennsylvania armed bank robbery suspect

CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA– The FBI’s Philadelphia Division is offering a reward of $25,000 for the public’s help in identifying a suspect responsible for a string of armed bank robberies around the Harrisburg area.

The male suspect’s four robberies spanned a three-month period from October 2016 into January 2017.

Local Facebook group helping Sweet Home employees

As we’ve reported, several Sweet Home Health Care workers say they went weeks without pay.

Now, women across Central Pennsylvania are using the power of social media to help them, and other women, in times of need.

One of those women, Maria Roche says the missed paychecks nearly left her and her children homeless.

“My landlord texted me saying you got 30 days. Either move out or pay the rent,” Roche said.

Average price of gas in Central PA continues to drop, according to GasBuddy.com

HARRISBURG — Gas prices in Harrisburg and its surrounding area dropped an average of 5.9 cents per gallon in the last week, according to the latest survey from GasBuddy.com.

The average price of gas in the area surrounding the state capitol is $2.67 per gallon, according to the website’s weekly survey of 241 stations. The average price for a gallon of gas has fallen an average of 8.6 cents per gallon in the last month, but are still 25.5 cents per gallon higher than they were a year ago, according to GasBuddy.

Central Pennsylvania residents react to Kobe Bryant’s death

Shockwaves of Kobe Bryant’s passing can also be felt here in the commonwealth, tonight.

CBS 21’s Karina Cheung spoke to sports fans at Mr. G’s Sports Bar in Harrisburg.

They said time and time again that Bryant is a Pennsylvania legacy, and always will be.

“My jaw dropped in shock,” said Ryan Wallace. “It was just tragic, but my first reaction was, I didn’t think about basketball, I thought about him as a man and as a father.”

‘We just wanted to bless them’: Church helps pay off $2.5M in medical debt for 1,546 central Pa. residents

A midstate megachurch has teamed with a charity to help pay off $2.5 million in medical bill debt for 1,546 people in central Pennsylvania.

Those payoffs occurred when the Lancaster County-based LCBC church provided $25,000 raised during its Be Rich initiative to RIP Medical Debt.

RIP, a New York-based nonprofit, used that cash to buy and retire the unpaid debt for pennies on the dollar.

West Shore Home donates 984 pounds of food to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank

Pennsylvania drug detective accused of trading official actions for sex

HARRISBURG, Pa. — A federal indictment unsealed Wednesday accuses a former central Pennsylvania detective who served on a drug task force of having traded official actions for sexual favors.

Federal prosecutors said a grand jury indicted former Carlisle police officer Christopher Collare, 52, of Blythewood, South Carolina, on charges of bribery, heroin distribution, fraud and lying to federal agents.

The precedent-setting opinion

handed down Friday hinges on the federal government’s definition of a “serious crime” — the level a crime must reach to trigger an individual being barred from buying firearms.

Under federal law, a serious crime is one that can carry a state-prison sentence of two or more years.

Mansfield athletes volunteer at Second Chance Animal Care Sanctuaries

“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on Earth,” once said Muhammad Ali.

Following the advice of the great boxer, philanthropist, and social activist, the Mansfield University women’s track and field team paid a little ‘rent’ with Second Chance Animal Care Sanctuaries in Tioga earlier this month.

During their time volunteering, the Mountaineers spent time exercising the dogs, caring for and playing with the cats and kittens, and cleaning different areas of the facility.

“A day on, not a day off” for Boys and Girls Club of Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, Pa. —  Since 1994 millions of volunteers have participated as part of the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. This year, volunteers in central Pennsylvania worked on dozens of projects, doing everything from knitting scarves to picking up litter.

While most government offices were closed today, the Harrisburg City Government Center was open for an MLK Day of Service project put on students in the after-school program of the Boys and Girls Club of Harrisburg. Students in sixth through 11th grade helped make and serve 100 hot meals to those in need.

No one except the newly elected mayor of Mount Carbon showed up this month for a reorganizational meeting.

The Schuylkill County borough’s fate has hung in the balance since last year, when all three council members quit and the borough secretary resigned.
