Central Pa. fire officials warn about carbon monoxide poisoning in the winter

The flurries started falling throughout central Pennsylvania on Tuesday morning. By Tuesday afternoon, business was picking up at hardware stores across our area.

Jolynn Weist, the owner of Weist Hardware in New Cumberland, Cumberland County, said she is seeing an increase in customers trying to get ahead of the cold weather. Many of them are purchasing portable heaters for their homes.

Coldest air of the season arrives Tuesday in south-central Pennsylvania

The coldest air of the season is dropping temperatures in south-central Pennsylvania.

“We can see wind gusts up close to 30 m.ph., or a little higher as this upper low is on top of us. The strong wind leads to the cold conditions, which is why we made it an Impact Day, ” said WGAL Meteorologist T.J. Springer.

Central Pa. woman doing yard work dies after tree falls on her: police

A Franklin County woman was trying to get yard work done over the weekend when a falling tree killed her, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Tammy Smith, 42, of Chambersburg, died between about 3 p.m. and 4:52 p.m. Saturday on the 2800 block of Woodstock Road in Greene Township, according to state police.

Infection, hand washing are concerns in central PA hospitals, new safety report says

A national watchdog group recently scored some central Pennsylvania hospitals below average for several safety metrics, including hand washing, infection and having specially trained doctors care for patients in the intensive care unit.

The Leapfrog Group is a nonprofit organization that provides ratings and safety data for hospitals, and it recently released grades for nearly 3,000 hospitals across the country.

New photos show suspect accused of critically injuring 79-year-old woman in Philadelphia

 Philadelphia police have released images for one of the two shooting suspects believed to be involved in critically injuring a 79-year-old woman on Friday.

The woman, who was an innocent bystander, was shot in the head during a shootout on the 3400 block of North 3rd Street in the city’s Hunting Park section.

Organic Remedies Donates $20,000 to Support Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Survivors and Their Families

PBCC is a local nonprofit that supports and serves breast cancer survivors and their families in Pennsylvania through educational programming, legislative advocacy, and breast cancer research grants.

A freeze for Thanksgiving? See the weather, travel forecast for central Pennsylvania

More than 55 million Americans are expected to travel more than 50 miles this week as the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, according to the American Automobile Association. If you’re hitting the road, you’d be wise to plan ahead by looking at the upcoming forecast.

Central Pennsylvania residents should see rain early this week before clearer skies arrive closer to Thanksgiving. Be sure to bring a coat, too, as temperatures are expected to drop near freezing by Thursday.

Central Pa. school administrator and music director charged with sex crimes: state police

State Police in Lancaster County on Tuesday charged a man who works in several area schools and a mini golf course with multiple felony sex crimes against children.

Investigators say David Preston Griffith, 28, of Strasburg Township, offered oral sex to a juvenile male while working as a manager at the miniature golf course in exchange for work benefits, filmed a naked 15-year-old girl in his bedroom, and engaged in sex acts with a 16-year-old girl who worked at the golf course. The incidents took place over the course of at least six years.

PA Reaches Settlement with Central PA Property Manager who Prohibited Tenants from Posting Negative Reviews

Attorney General Michelle A. Henry announced a settlement with central Pennsylvania-based Inch & Company Property Management, LLC over alleged violations of the Federal Consumer Review Fairness Act and Pennsylvania Unfair Trade Practices and Consumer Protection Law.

The settlement addresses lease terms that purported to unlawfully prohibit tenants of Inch & Company properties from posting online reviews about the property and management. Posting negative online reviews subjected tenants to financial penalties, per lease terms.

13 dogs rescued from deplorable conditions in Philadelphia home

“Keep the roads passable:” PennDOT provides winter update ahead of the season

This weekend, PennDOT provided a mid-November update on its winter preparations.

They said that they have plenty of salt on hand and when it comes to staffing, they find themselves in a good position.

As of now in Allegheny County, there are 134 plow truck operators and 16 seasonal employees to clear the roads.

Central PA Humane Society expanding to address overpopulation and improve quarantine methods

The Central Pennsylvania Humane Society in Altoona is getting a big upgrade. It’s moving from a building on one acre of land to a new space with eight acres to work with. This comes as overpopulation overwhelms the shelter.

“We just are overwhelmed with the amount of animals that we get in here. We’re very overpopulated and don’t have the space in here that’s needed,” said Joseph Zolna, the board president for the Central PA Humane Society.
