Driest May on record affecting central Pa. crop yields

This is central Pennsylvania’s driest May on record, according to data from the National Weather Service.

The Harrisburg area received just 0.19 inches of rain so far this May, more than 3.5 inches less than average for the month and five inches less than average so far this year.

‘Learn-to-Row’ with the Central Pennsylvania Rowing Association

The Central Pennsylvania Rowing Association is offering a free learn-to-row program for new rowers ages 12 to 18 this summer beginning next week.

The program will run Wednesday, June 7 through Wednesday, June 28.

Sessions will be held from 8:15 to 10:15 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Central Pennsylvania Rowing Association (CPRA) boathouse at Shikellamy State Park, Sunbury.

Black Fly spraying planned for Central Pennsylvania

An aerial blackfly suppression operation has been planned for Wednesday, May 31, for portions of central Pennsylvania.

According to the York County Office of Emergency Management, the operation will be along the main stem of the Susquehanna River. The spraying will begin in Northumberland County and will work its way south toward York County.

Jose and Antonio Centenera are fraternal twins, but brothers don’t come much closer than these two Trinity High grads. They’re separated by two minutes at birth but only hundredths of a GPA point.

Traffic patterns have changed post-pandemic | What that means for you

Shell agrees to pay $10 million for air pollution at massive new Pennsylvania petrochemical plant

Shell has agreed to pay $10 million to resolve allegations that it polluted the air around its massive new petrochemical refinery in western Pennsylvania, the administration of Gov. Josh Shapiro announced Wednesday.

Shell acknowledged that the plant, located along the Ohio River about 30 miles (48 kilometers) outside of Pittsburgh, violated air emissions limits, officials said. The multibillion-dollar facility opened in November, only to be shut down months later after the company said it identified a problem with a system that’s designed to burn off unwanted gases.

Pennsylvania high court to consider plan to make power plants pay for greenhouse gas emissions

Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court will take its first crack at whether a governor can force power plant owners to pay for their planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions, or whether he first needed approval from a Legislature that refused to go along with the plan.

Hanging in the balance is Pennsylvania’s effort to become the first major fossil fuel-producing state to adopt carbon pricing.

Farmers’ Almanac predicts ‘scorching’ summer in Pennsylvania. Here’s what you can expect

State College-area residents may be in for a particularly hot summer this year, according to an outlook from the National Weather Service and a prediction from the Farmers’ Almanac.

Most of Pennsylvania has a 40% to 50% likelihood of above-normal temperatures from May to July, according to the NWS Climate Prediction Center, but an eastern sliver of the state has about a 50% to 60% chance.

 Near the end of 2021, Jessica Callahan was living in Columbus, Ohio, working as a social science researcher and wondering if there was a better way to support herself. Her friends Julie Ross and Austin Carter had similar thoughts and a similar solution: Open a bookstore.

“I think a lot of people re-evaluated what was important to them during the lockdown and we realized the place we were always happy to be at was a bookstore,” says the 30-year-old Callahan, who with Ross and Carter last year founded the Pocket Books Shop in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, close to Carter’s hometown.

Central Pa. motorcyclist dies after losing control on I-81: state police

A Franklin County man was killed Sunday evening when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a guardrail along Interstate 81, Pennsylvania State Police said.

Mark D. Brown, 65, of Greencastle, was driving in the left lane of I-81 south in Guilford Township when the crash happened around 7:12 p.m., according to state police.

A man in York County, Pennsylvania has been charged with the rape of a 7-year-old child, according to Carroll Township Police

Police were first notified of the incident on Nov. 19, 2022, when officers spoke with 35-year-old Andrew Harrison, 35, and the juvenile victim.

Officials warn of ‘co-sleeping’ with newborns

“Co-sleeping,” when parents let their infant children sleep in bed with them, may be tempting for new parents as they care for their newborns. But a Pennsylvania police department has an urgent and timely warning they want to share with the community.

“Well, in the past several months, our department has investigated two incidents where a child passed away under parental custody where the child was rolled over during a sleeping environment at home. And the child did not make a child did not survive,” said Swatara Township Police Director of Public Safety Darrell Reider.

Top fast-food chains you can’t find in Central Pennsylvania

While most of Central Pennsylvania is used to seeing McDonald’s, KFCs and Taco Bells across the area, there are plenty of high-rated fast-food chains that Central Pa does not have.

Looking at QSR Magazine’s top 50 fast-food restaurants list from 2019 shows there are 21 restaurants that are nowhere to be found across our 10-county region. Additionally, there are ten restaurants with just one or two locations in the area, making it harder for people to enjoy those chains if they aren’t willing to travel.
