Officials with the district say they are looking to fill roughly 1,000 positions.

Lancaster’s Tec Centro is a model for workforce development for three other cities

A week after her father died, Essence Lewis, a Reading mother of seven children, took a third shift job so that she could attend morning classes at Reading’s new Tec Centro center. Now, after graduating from the program in October and gaining her state certification, she has found a family-sustaining career path as a certified nurse aide.

Lewis found that success thanks to a Tec Centro Berks, a relatively new program modeled after the one that originated in Lancaster city, said Violet Emory, program director.

Technical schools see increased enrollment, businesses struggle to hire skilled workers

YORK, Pa. — Technical schools in Central Pennsylvania say applications have gone up significantly over the last couple of years.

A report by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center showed that in the spring of 2022, nationwide enrollment at two-year institutions in construction trades increased by 19.3%

Pennsylvania’s poll worker recruitment effort drew 1,100 last week

Pennsylvania elections officials said Wednesday that a push last week to recruit new poll workers produced more than 1,100 applicants, including at least one in 58 of 67 counties.

The effort tied to Help America Vote Day, organized by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, brought in the most applicants in some of the populous suburbs of Philadelphia — 221 in Montgomery County, 132 in Chester and 91 in Delaware.

With care and honor

Once a nurse, always a nurse, local nurses say, and a new, local organization, the Central Pennsylvania Nurses Honor Guard, provides a memorial service that recognizes a life spent caring for others.

Active since November, the guard has honored six late colleagues as of June 30, said founder Cindy Bowman, a Penn State Altoona nursing instructor and a member of the Altoona/Mercy Hospitals Schools of Nursing Alumni Association. The new honor guard has 12 members.

Three Central PA state parks will host job fairs March 12 in effort to hire lifeguards for summer

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Central Pennsylvania’s state parks are looking for a few new lifeguards.

After battling with lifeguard shortages for the last few summers, Codorus State Park in York County, Little Buffalo State Park in Perry County and Caledonia State Park in Adams and Franklin counties are planning to hold job fairs to attract prospective lifeguards on Saturday, March 12.

West Pharmaceutical in Lycoming County set for expansion, will create 200 new area jobs

Harrisburg, Pa. – Good things, and new jobs, are about to be happening for the area around Williamsport and Jersey Shore, according to the governor’s office.

West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc., a global manufacturer in design and production of high-quality delivery systems for injectable medicines, will be expanding and modernizing its Williamsport manufacturing plant, according to the Wolf administration.

This will mean an $18 million investment into the expansion project.
