K9 who helped track escaped inmate Danelo Cavalcante honored at National Dog Show

 A very special member of the Pennsylvania State Police was honored in Chester County this weekend in front of a crowd of over 1,000 people.

The National Dog Show in Oaks honored K9 Rom, who was heavily involved in the search for escaped Chester County prisoner Danelo Cavalcante back in September.

Dog found dead in central Pa. creek had been weighed down by rock: police

A dead dog was found in a Perry County creek last week, inside a backpack weighed down with a rock, Pennsylvania State Police said.

The black backpack was found around 12:49 a.m. Oct. 6 in Shermans Creek, Carroll Township, state police said. When troopers opened the backpack, they found the body of a small black dog and a large rock.

Cases of kennel cough on the rise in Central Pennsylvania

Several animal-based facilities in Blair, Centre and Huntingdon County have closed due to a rise in kennel cough cases.

Kennel cough is easily transmitted between dogs by airborne droplets, contaminated surfaces or breathing the same air.

Flamingo visiting central Pa. injured in attack: Will its mate abandon it?

It’s been a rough few days for a pair of flamingos spotted in central Pennsylvania.

The two birds were found in Long Lane Pond in St. Thomas, Franklin County, after being among the many birds apparently blown off course by Hurricane Idalia in recent days.

And if being miles further north than usual wasn’t bad enough, one of them was recently injured by local wildlife, leading the two animals to be separated.

City weighs bowhunting program to cull deer population

Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey is sending a forceful message Tuesday morning: The buck stops here.

The administration has submitted legislation to city council that would establish a pilot program for controlled bowhunting in two city parks. It’s an effort to rein in a deer population whose growth is harming parks and aggravating residents who live near them.

‘It’s not the time to let down your guard’: Researchers say spotted lanternfly problem is here to stay

Across south-central Pennsylvania, some people have spotted them, others are still wondering why they aren’t seeing the same droves of lanternflies they saw just one year ago.

“The population is not gone by any sense of the imagination, but it is not as big as it has been,” said Brian Walsh, an educator and spotted lanternfly researcher at Penn State Extension. “It’s really a matter of real estate. Where you are will have an impact on how many you are seeing.”

Lindgren was driving through Cross Fork, a small village in northern Pennsylvania on Sunday, when she spotted a young bear on the side of the road with a plastic container stuck on its head.

York County-based horse rescue has saved more than 150 horses from slaughter over past seven years

A horse rescue in York County is saving horses destined for slaughter. More than 30 horses currently living at the Central Pa. Horse Rescue in Warrington Township were set to be killed until the organization stepped in to save them.

“We can’t save them all. We can’t make a difference in everyone’s life, but we definitely make a difference in the ones we save,” said Connie Greenawalt, founder of Central Pa. Horse Rescue.

Malnourished Alligator Named ‘Fluffy’ Found in Pennsylvania Creek

A Pennsylvania landscaper made a shocking — and scaly — discovery on Wednesday morning.

According to local TV station WFMZ, the man was working in Exeter Township when he came across an animal that was a long way from home — an alligator named Fluffy.

The reptile, which measured at over 2-feet-long when discovered, was found in a Berks County creek, the outlet reported.

Central Pennsylvania Humane Society struggles to care for large number of ‘pandemic pets’

Filled with the barks of more than 50 dogs, the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society in Altoona is over its capacity. That’s causing strain on the animals and staff of the no-kill shelter, manager Dylan Kotrick said.

Kotrick said the shelter’s capacity is 50 dogs, though 30-40 provides more adequate space and attention for each canine. Currently, there are 54 dogs housed on site, and some are living in outdoor cages.

Black Fly spraying planned for Central Pennsylvania

An aerial blackfly suppression operation has been planned for Wednesday, May 31, for portions of central Pennsylvania.

According to the York County Office of Emergency Management, the operation will be along the main stem of the Susquehanna River. The spraying will begin in Northumberland County and will work its way south toward York County.

Baby kangaroo rescued in Central Pa. after man tried to sell it on Facebook

A joey who somehow ended up in Adams County was rescued by the Pennsylvania Game Commission after someone tried to sell it on Facebook for $5,000.

The 6-month-old kangaroo was seized from a man in Littletown who allegedly lied to officials about having the animal before they executed a search warrant, according to a Facebook post from the commission’s south-central division.
