Cable companies in northeastern and central Pennsylvania get big bucks to expand high-speed internet

in Community/Government/News

Ten northeastern and central Pennsylvania counties will share in more than $31.25 million to extend access to broadband internet service, according to a state agency.

In all, the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority awarded almost $204.2 million to 53 projects in 42 counties on Thursday. The projects will bring high-speed internet access to about 40,000 homes and businesses and have an estimated total value of almost $407 million.

PA Muslim and Arab-Americans rethink voting options over Biden’s Gaza stance

A portion of Muslim and Arab-American voters in Pennsylvania are voicing their discontent with President Biden’s handling of the war in Gaza.

This comes as the Pennsylvania primary is less than two weeks away.

Several groups have emerged nationwide, with activists in Central Pennsylvania spearheading efforts to sway voters away from supporting Biden.

Pennsylvania considers removing Sunday hunting ban

Pennsylvania lawmakers are currently considering the removal of the longstanding prohibition on Sunday hunting.

House Bill 2106, sponsored by Representative Mandy Steele, and Senate Bill 67, sponsored by Senator Dan Laughlin, aim to allow hunting on Sundays, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Changes begin for some Central Pennsylvania Amtrak riders

Amtrak is currently using buses to replace some of their trains between Harrisburg and Lancaster while they are working on rail construction.

What will viewing conditions be like for the solar eclipse in South-Central Pennsylvania?

There’s a chance you’ll be able to see some of today’s solar eclipse in South-Central Pennsylvania.

While the Susquehanna Valley is not in the path of totality, the eclipse here will be 90% to 95% coverage. With that said, we need clear skies to get a good view.

Work to begin in Rothrock State Forest on new trails in central PA, thanks to local efforts

Work on a new 7.5-mile trail in the Musser Gap area of Rothrock State Forest is set to begin this year. This project is the first part of plans for 53 miles of trails in Centre and Huntingdon counties.

Jay Ziegler, president of the Rothrock Trail Alliance that’s part of ClearWater Conservancy, said the new trail will connect Musser Gap to Pine Swamp Road.

Trooper Vaughn Norbert of Troop C in Punxsutawney said that residents in the area have recently reported getting these phone calls.

Central Pa. trio accused of stealing over $300,000 from insurance companies

A Central Pennsylvania trio has been accused of stealing over $300,000 from insurance companies by filing fraudulent automobile insurance claims.

A Grand Jury investigated an organization comprised of Kwa’rai Samuel, 24, Lori Fish, 50, and Kevin Hartung, 45, and two auto body repair shops, known as LKR Auto Body and Hopper’s Foreign Auto Body and Parts.

Lead could be present in many homes across Central Pennsylvania, one expert says

We could be around lead and not even know about it. Lead can be found in paint, flooring, makeup, or even your front yard. A lead expert says in Central Pennsylvania it’s especially common in homes due to when they were built.

Cot’y Farmer, a Harrisburg grandmother, discovered lead is still an issue Harrisburg. A test this year showed her two-year-old granddaughter had elevated lead levels of 4.7.

UPMC in Central Pa. offers team approach to spine care

UPMC in Central Pa. has launched a new spine care program using a multi-disciplinary approach. 

The program connects patients with a team of experts to evaluate and treat a variety of conditions ranging from spine tumors and scoliosis to back pain and weakness or numbness in the arms and legs, UPMC in Central Pa. said. 

“Spine conditions can cause pain or an inability to do everyday tasks, which can severely impact a patient’s quality of life,” said Dr. Bryan Bolinger, neurosurgeon, UPMC Spine Care in Central Pa. “Our goal as a care team is to collaborate with patients on a personalized care plan that will get them back to doing the things they love most.”

Pa. car crash leads U.S. Marshals to Manhattan murder suspects

Two murder suspects were arrested in Pennsylvania after they were involved in a car crash in Dauphin County.

The U.S. Marshals Service arrested the two suspects early Friday morning March 22.

Both Halley Tejada and Kensly Alston were taken into custody in York on charges of receiving stolen property. The charges stem from a motor vehicle accident that happened on March 13, when the vehicle Alston was driving collided with another, causing an accident on Jonestown Road, Dauphin County.

Pa. election 2024: How much the Democratic and Republican attorney general candidates have raised

In wide-open primary races for Pennsylvania attorney general, campaign finance reports show the Republican establishment is largely rallying around one candidate while donors are still spreading their cash out among the five Democratic hopefuls.

Democratic and Republican voters will select their parties’ candidates in the April 23 primary. Because Pennsylvania has closed primaries, voters who are independent or registered to third parties cannot participate, though they can vote in the Nov. 5 general election.

Bomb threats target library, its director over Drag Queen Story Hour

The scene outside the Lancaster Public Library on Saturday continued to grow increasingly more tense amid reports of several bomb threats targeting a Drag Queen Story Hour that had been planned for the afternoon.

The event was canceled Saturday morning after authorities found a suspicious package in the library.

‘Beanie bandit’ accused of stealing from central Pa. stores

A man police agencies in multiple states have deemed the “beanie bandit” allegedly stole over $4,000 worth of items from two central Pennsylvania stores.

The Lycoming Regional Police Department (LRPD) says they were called to the CVS Pharmacy on Lycoming Creek Road, Old Lycoming Township, to investigate a retail theft on February 10.

Being a welder | Tyler Tries It

There is a welder shortage in south-central Pennsylvania and across the country. It’s so severe that the American Welding Society has predicted a shortage of around 360,000 welders by 2027.

FOX43’s Tyler Hatfield went to Earlbeck Welding Training Center to light up the torch and put on the helmet, to learn about the trade and art of welding.
