Josh Shapiro secures Pa. governor’s office, beating election-denier Doug Mastriano

in Government/News/Politics

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro handily won the commonwealth’s governorship, besting state Sen. Doug Mastriano, according to a race call by The Associated Press.

Shapiro, like many Democrats this cycle, campaigned on protecting the right to an abortion. Both chambers of the Pennsylvania legislature have GOP majorities, although that could change this cycle. In 2017, sitting Democratic governor Tom Wolf vetoed a bill to ban abortions at 20 weeks.

Amid intense scrutiny, Americans vote with no major hitches

in Community/News/Politics

The final day of voting in the 2022 midterms unfolded Tuesday without major disruptions or widespread problems, a relatively trouble-free end to the first nationwide election since a campaign of conspiracy theories and false claims began attacking public confidence in the way ballots are cast and counted.

Scattered problems arose during the day that frustrated voters but did not appear to affect the ability to accurately tally the votes. On Tuesday, the House State Government Committee approved the bill that would make legislative expense reports more easily accessible to the public online.

“How can anyone be against it?” said state Rep. Scott Conklin, D-Centre County.

Good question. Yet one would be forgiven a bit of cynicism — even if the committee vote was unanimous.
