Pennsylvania race previews Democrats’ plan to focus campaign on democracy

Democratic congressional candidate Mike O’Brien had only been knocking on doors in a leafy suburban neighborhood here for about 20 minutes when he came upon a house with a sign featuring his opponent’s face in the window. He smiled.

“WANTED for crimes against the CONSTITUTION,” the sign read. “Scott Perry for Prison. Traitor. Insurrectionist. Criminal.”

“That’s one of the reasons why I’m running,” O’Brien, one of six Democrats vying to unseat Perry, a GOP congressman, told the couple who answered the door. “You can’t let Trump and Perry overthrow democracy under the guise of patriotism anymore.”

Cable companies in northeastern and central Pennsylvania get big bucks to expand high-speed internet

Ten northeastern and central Pennsylvania counties will share in more than $31.25 million to extend access to broadband internet service, according to a state agency.

In all, the Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority awarded almost $204.2 million to 53 projects in 42 counties on Thursday. The projects will bring high-speed internet access to about 40,000 homes and businesses and have an estimated total value of almost $407 million.

PA Muslim and Arab-Americans rethink voting options over Biden’s Gaza stance

This comes as the Pennsylvania primary is less than two weeks away.

Pa. election 2024: How much the Democratic and Republican attorney general candidates have raised

In wide-open primary races for Pennsylvania attorney general, campaign finance reports show the Republican establishment is largely rallying around one candidate while donors are still spreading their cash out among the five Democratic hopefuls.

Democratic and Republican voters will select their parties’ candidates in the April 23 primary. Because Pennsylvania has closed primaries, voters who are independent or registered to third parties cannot participate, though they can vote in the Nov. 5 general election.

Pennsylvania’s population loss since 2020 occurred mostly in counties Joe Biden won

Newly released Census data show Pennsylvania’s population declines since the last presidential election are mostly concentrated in counties where President Joe Biden won in 2020.

About 45,000 Pennsylvania residents left counties that Biden won, according to the analysis from Franklin & Marshall College. Counties that voted for former President Donald Trump gained 4,500 residents, adding up to a net statewide loss of about 41,000 people from the 13.0 million residents counted during the 2020 census.

TikTok could be removed from mobile devices in the United States as soon as late summer, following a decision from the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives.

A bill that passed the house with wide bi-partisan support could ban TikTok in the U.S. if the app refuses to part ways with its parent company, ByteDance, in the next five months.

Pennsylvania sends $6M for these homeless services

About two dozen grants totaling $6.3 million will go to 25 counties in Pennsylvania to combat homelessness.

The Emergency Solutions Grants, issued by the Department of Community and Economic Development, can be used for prevention, emergency rehousing, street outreach, emergency shelter, and related uses.

“The funding approved today will go to trusted community organizations to assist individuals and families experiencing or facing homelessness,” department Secretary Rick Siger said in a release. “The Shapiro administration is committed to helping the most vulnerable members of our communities, and ESG funding provides local governments and nonprofits across the commonwealth with the tools they need to help unlock critical housing resources to support them.”

When dialing the phone or texting someone, you may notice three numbers that come before the actual phone number. Area codes have been around since the 1940s and are apart of the North American Numbering Plan.

But how many does our area in Central Pennsylvania have?

Pennsylvania airports to get share of $1 billion in federal airport terminal funding

Three Pennsylvania airports will be among those receiving funds from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Airport Terminal Program, part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) will receive $5.3 million for part of the construction of a new 700,000 square foot landside terminal that will reduce the distance between the ticketing, security and gates by half a mile, according to a release from U.S. Rep. Summer Lee (D-12th District).

South Central PA gets influx of cash for clean water and sediment reduction agreements

Pennsylvania’s Fiscal Year 2022-2023 budget, Act 54 of 2022, allocated $22 million of non-lapsing funds to the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) for the establishment of the PENNVEST Clean Water Procurement Program (CWPP) and the purchase of verified nutrient and sediment reductions by PENNVEST through a competitive bidding process. PENNVEST issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) on June 30, 2023 and on January 19, 2024 PENNVEST issued a Notice to Proceed for the five Nutrient and Sediment Reduction Purchase Agreements being awarded for the purchase of up to 32,128 pounds of verified nitrogen reductions, and the associated 6,323.86 pounds of verified phosphorus and 3,457,762.16 pounds of sediment reductions, for a maximum purchase price of $14.8 million.

1.34 million Pennsylvanians would benefit from increase in minimum wage

A new report looking into the benefits of raising the minimum wage in Pennsylvania was released by the Keystone Research Center, a progressive-leaning think tank, on Thursday.

“In this report, we dispel some really persistent myths,” Claire Kovach, a senior research analyst for the Keystone Research Center, told reporters through a call with the press on Thursday.

“One of which is that only teenagers stand to benefit from a $15 minimum wage, which is far from reality shown in our data drawn from the US Census Bureau and the Economic Policy Institute.”

Will heated local races boost turnout? What are Pa.’s latest voter registration numbers? We got that.

Although there are some intense races in south-central Pennsylvania, local election officials expect only about a quarter to a third of voters, maybe, to cast ballots in Tuesday’s municipal election.

Gerald Feaser Jr., the director of registrations and elections for Dauphin County, said he expects turnout to reach 25% to 30%, typical for a non-presidential year, but still too low for his liking.

Voter registration update: Republicans enjoy a strong year ahead of Election 2023

Off-years, or odd-numbered years, tend to be favorable for the party out of the White House, and 2023 looks to be no exception.

Since my last voter registration update in October 2022, Pennsylvania Republicans saw impressive gains all across the Commonwealth. Back then, the statewide Democratic margin was 549,288, a lead that’s since been whittled down to 445,890, constituting a shift of 103,398 towards the Pennsylvania GOP.

Pennsylvania joins multi-state lawsuit against Meta

Harrisburg, Pa. — A lawsuit has accused Meta Platforms, Inc., of knowingly designing and deploying features that are harmful to children on its platforms while simultaneously assuring the public that the platforms are safe for kids.

Led by Attorney General Michelle Henry, Pennsylvania has joined multiple other Attorneys General in the federal lawsuit.

Pa. American Water alerts central Pa. customers to conserve water

According to a press release sent out by the company, this conservation order applies to about 42,000 customer connections in the Mechanicsburg water system.

This additionally includes locations such as Silver Spring Township, Hampden Township, Lower Allen Township, Lemoyne Borough, Worleysburg Borough, East Pennsboro Township, New Cumberland Borough, Fairview Township, and others.

Construction of central Pa. firm’s $47M feed mill is about halfway done

Construction has reached the approximate halfway point of a Middletown firm’s $47.3 million feed mill adjacent to Interstate 80 in Union County.

When completed by this time next year the County View Family Farms mill will be producing 8,000 tons of finished seed a week that will be shipped to 150 hog farms in Pennsylvania, said William Fink, facilities manager.
