State parks in Sunshine State nothing like those here in PA

in Community/News/Outdoor

Always on the lookout for good hiking trails, I was eagerly anticipating some nice, flat, sunny, and warm trails on a visit to the Florida Keys last week. While the trip was a perfect remedy for the winter blahs, the hiking possibilities were a total bust.

State parks in Florida, at least that I saw, are nothing like state parks in Pennsylvania. In fact, very little that goes on in Florida bears any resemblance to our beloved Commonwealth. But there are 175 state parks in Florida, with over 100 miles of beach and nearly 2,000 miles of hiking trails. In the Keys, we visited three parks, and none of them had any hiking trails.

Shed hunting in central Pennsylvania

in Animals/News/Outdoor

Do you need an excuse to get up out of that chair and get some fresh air and exercise? If so, why not try shed hunting? No silly — I don’t mean that little shack behind the house with the mowers and shovels in it. I am referring to shed antlers. You know, those awesome eye-catching pieces of bone that grow on the heads of such fascinating critters as whitetail deer and elk.

Why shed hunting? I think the real question should be why not. I am willing to bet that like most folks, you overdid it on the holiday goodies and have been lounging around thinking you will get back in shape when warmer weather arrives. Why wait? Put on your favorite pair of hiking boots and head out for some fresh air and exercise now!

12-year-old central Pa. boy bags elk during rare hunting opportunity

in Community/News/Outdoor

Still feeling the afterglow of his 12th birthday three days prior, on Aug. 20, West Perry Middle School student Chris Bowersox went to a football scrimmage. His mom’s phone rang again and again, but it wasn’t until after the game that they heard the news: Chris had been drawn by the Pennsylvania Game Commission for an elk hunting license.

When he got home, he found out that not only did he get an elk tag, but that his tag was for antlered elk during the general season. He had won the lottery, being one of only 31 recipients of such a tag this year.

The discovery of New Zealand Mudsnails in two Centre County state fish hatcheries has created new safety protocols, but the number of trout being stocked should remain the same.
