On the Right Trail: Central PA has become a mountain bike mecca, thanks to area activists

in Uncategorized

Like many pursuits, mountain biking is sort of an all-or-nothing venture.

If you’re not into it, you may not know a whole lot about the activity. But if you are into it—it’s a sport, it’s a passion, it’s a way of life.

Fortunately, central Pennsylvania is home to a thriving mountain bike subculture.

There are plenty of great biking trails in and around Harrisburg, and the local mountain biking community is supported by the efforts of SAMBA.

SAMBA stands for Susquehanna Area Mountain Bike Association, the local chapter of the global International Mountain Biking Association. SAMBA’s stated mission is to “provide information, education and support to the central Pennsylvania mountain bike riders.”

With some 320 members, SAMBA is very active in Dauphin and surrounding counties, maintaining and designing area bike trails and creating positive working relationships with area land management agencies. But SAMBA supports all area mountain biking activities, not just the ones engaged in by its members.

The barn originally was built in 1914 by the Noah Sheely family, and it started out as a traditional rectangular barn that took more than seven total months to finish. But later that year, the barn burned down and the family decided they wanted to rebuild something special.

Fundraisers support legacy of young girl; honor charities in her name

in Pennsylvania

It is over a year and a half since the passing of Adriana Grace, age 14, of South Williamsport, but her family and friends continue to spread gratitude in honor of their “kind and giving” daughter.

“[Adriana] was such a kind and giving person that it has been instrumental in our grief process to keep that legacy alive by continuing to raise money in order to give to others in need, as well as charities that impacted her life,” said Adriana’s aunt, Jamie Pike.

In the past, Adriana’s family has raised funds for the following organizations that represent Adriana and her legacy: The Lycoming County SPCA, a place Adriana enjoyed to visit; The Ronald McDonald House, an organization that provided items and support to her family when Adriana, at only 2 lbs, lived in an incubator at the Danville Hospital; The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, an organization for the cause which cost Adriana her life, but can support someone else’s choice to live; South Williamsport High School, which will honor one senior each year with a scholarship in Adriana’s honor.

The American Red Cross urges you to donate blood to help address local shortages

in Health/Pennsylvania/Uncategorized

Every two seconds, someone in the US needs a blood transfusion.

But during an ongoing pandemic, the need becomes even greater for blood and platelet donors, according to the American Red Cross.

Blood drives are essential in helping to fill the missing A’s, B’s and O’s throughout the year.

You may not think of one donation as a large contribution, but it only takes one pint of blood to save up to three lives.

Bonnie Wolf, an account manager with the American Red Cross, says while O blood types are in high demand, the need for all blood types is constant and ongoing.

“ We need all of the blood types, but the one’s that are extremely short are, O negative, O positive and B negative,” she says.
