Applications Open for Arts Festival Children and Youth Sidewalk Sale, Banner Competition

The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts has opened the 2024 application period for two of its signature events.

Applications will be accepted until June 14 for the Children and Youth Sidewalk Sale and the Banner Exhibition and Competition

Part of the Children and Youth Day that kicks off the festival, the sidewalk sale will be held on Wednesday, July 10, on South Allen Street in State College. The 58th annual Arts Festival takes place July 10-14 on the streets of State College and the Penn State campus.

Traffic shift planned at central Pa. interchange improvement project

in Cars/Community/News

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced there will be a traffic shift early tomorrow morning on northbound Centerville Road at the Centerville Road Interchange Improvement Project in East Hempfield Township, Lancaster County.

Weather permitting, traffic will be shifted at 3 a.m. Thursday on northbound Centerville Road at the entrance to the Wheatland Federal Credit Union, located between Estelle Drive and Route 23 (Marietta Avenue) so a pipe can be installed across the business’s driveway before business hours. Work is expected to be completed before the credit union opens.

Power outages reported across Central Pennsylvania due to windy weather

Many people across the area have been dealing with rain, thunderstorms, and wind this morning. Wind gusts of nearly 30 miles per hour are expected throughout the day. This wind is causing some power outages around the region.

Health officials seeing a concerning number of norovirus cases in Central Pennsylvania

Local health officials want you to be aware of a highly contagious illness called the norovirus. It’s sweeping specifically across the Northeast and Central Pennsylvania is no stranger to it. The virus leads to diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the virus causes an average of over 465,000 emergency department visits and 19 to 21 million illnesses each year in the United States.

Although nationwide inflation is starting to cool, higher prices at the grocery market are still putting pressure on the average American shopper.

Food-at-home prices, which cover food purchases at grocery stores and supermarkets, have increased significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, according to a new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service. The agency’s recently published food price outlook indicates overall food-at-home prices increased by 11.4% in 2022 and another 5% in 2023. Current statistical models forecast a more modest 1.3% increase for 2024, but each jump — no matter how small — can create significant strains for those shopping on a budget.

Black Women in Aviation holds workshop for Central PA students

The first female mechanic maintenance technician at John F. Kennedy International Airport is sharing her love of aviation with young minds in Central PA.

Her organization, Black Women in Aviation, held its first annual future aviator workshop over the weekend.

The 24 participating students from all over the area got an exclusive tour of the airport, a corporate aircraft and a private hangar.

PA students gain hands-on experience in watershed conservation

It is almost time for some Pennsylvania students to get out of the classroom and into a canoe.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Pennsylvania Rivers and Streams Environmental Education Program is for students in grades 4-12. It takes place in the spring and fall.

Kassie Fenn, student leadership and education coordinator for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in Pennsylvania, said the program is mobile, so students meet up with educators for field trips to explore waterways in their communities. She pointed out it is a way to boost critical thinking skills and connect children to their local ecosystems.

Pennsylvania sends $6M for these homeless services

About two dozen grants totaling $6.3 million will go to 25 counties in Pennsylvania to combat homelessness.

The Emergency Solutions Grants, issued by the Department of Community and Economic Development, can be used for prevention, emergency rehousing, street outreach, emergency shelter, and related uses.

“The funding approved today will go to trusted community organizations to assist individuals and families experiencing or facing homelessness,” department Secretary Rick Siger said in a release. “The Shapiro administration is committed to helping the most vulnerable members of our communities, and ESG funding provides local governments and nonprofits across the commonwealth with the tools they need to help unlock critical housing resources to support them.”

Veolia proposing water rate hikes for central Pa. customers

Veolia Water Pennsylvania, which services central Pa. customers, is proposing a 22% water rate hike, according to a letter sent to customers.

If approved by the Public Utility Commission, residential customers who use an average of 3,500 gallons per month would see monthly increases from $49.64 to $60.79. Commercial customers using 25,000 gallons per month could face hikes from $353.93 to $433.34 per month, while industrial users face a 28% hike.

At a Goodwill store near State College, a rare LEGO piece was donated, mixed into a random box of donated jewelry. And that little LEGO is worth some big bucks.

Pennsylvania Hospital to Use Drones to Deliver Meds

York County-based WellSpan Health said this week it is preparing to use drones to deliver prescriptions and medical supplies to patients’ homes.

The drones are able to find their destination via programming, as opposed to the to kind which must remain within the sight of an operator. They will actually consist of two drones: One that flies to its destination and hovers above, and another that’s lowered on a tether to place a package at a location such as a doorstep or outdoor table, according to a WellSpan news release.

Last sunny day, then showers return in south-central Pennsylvania

Low clouds have developed in western Adams County and in parts of Cumberland, Perry, and Juniata Counties, but they won’t last long. Look for morning sunshine, and temperatures in the 20s.

Under mainly sunny skies, temperatures will reach to 46 degrees this afternoon. Winds remain light.

Clouds will increase tonight, with slightly milder lows around 30 degrees.

Getting better broadband internet in central PA with a speed test

The federal government is trying to expand internet access to everyone in the country with a program called Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD).

Pennsylvania was awarded just over $1 billion of BEAD money to expand access to high-speed broadband in unserved and underserved areas.

“What we’re trying to do is to make sure in our five-county region that we know exactly where those locations are that need service,” said Jennifer Wakeman, the executive director of DRIVE, an economic development group serving Columbia, Montour, Snyder, Union, and Northumberland Counties.

Gas prices spiking again in South-Central Pennsylvania

Gas prices are the highest they have been in months in South-Central Pennsylvania.

Analysts say most of the blame can be placed on the calendar and the end of the winter season.

“Refineries start doing maintenance to prepare for the summer driving season. That maintenance sees shut downs, less gasoline being produced and also a switch-over to summer gasoline, which will start here in just a week or two across much of the country,” said Patrick De Haan of Gasbuddy.

But how many does our area in Central Pennsylvania have?

Pennsylvania airports to get share of $1 billion in federal airport terminal funding

Three Pennsylvania airports will be among those receiving funds from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Airport Terminal Program, part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) will receive $5.3 million for part of the construction of a new 700,000 square foot landside terminal that will reduce the distance between the ticketing, security and gates by half a mile, according to a release from U.S. Rep. Summer Lee (D-12th District).

Members of the Central PA “NFL” rap group sentenced for roles in drug trafficking operation

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania announced that Anderson Ortiz, age 24, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Christopher C. Conner to 129 months in prison for drug trafficking and firearms charges.

According to United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam, the sentencing was the latest sentence imposed of the eight people charged in the indictment for running a drug trafficking conspiracy from 2018 to 2020.
