NEW DETAILS: 59 cats rescued from Windber home

Since the beginning of 2023 there have been multiple cases of animal cruelty and neglect in Pennsylvania.

On Monday, Central Pennsylvania learned of the newest case. According to the Cambria County Humane Society, 59 cats had to be rescued from a home in Windber home on Monday, March 11. The Animal Protective Services of The Humane Society of Cambria County said the situation was an “extreme hoarding case.”

Over 90 dogs recovered from home in Bedford County

Multiple humane societies and Pennsylvania State Police responded to the scene of a home on Old Route 220 in Bedford where, reportedly, over 90 dogs were discovered to have been inside.

It was reported that eight troopers and two crime investigators were on the scene. Bedford County Humane Society and six other county humane societies, including those from Blair and Adams, also responded to help home and care for the dogs.

‘A true miracle’: All dogs adopted at central Pa. animal shelter days before Christmas

They’re calling it a miracle in Adams County.

Three days before Christmas, the Adams County Adams County SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) announced that its kennels are empty.

“Our community stepped up once again! This is the first time in 47 years that the Adams County SPCA is empty let alone at Christmas time, it is a true miracle!,” the organization posted on its Facebook page, along with a photo of their empty kennels.

PSP: 6,000-8,000 minks released from central PA fur farm

Thousands of minks are on the loose after someone cut holes in a fence and released them from a fur farm near Sunbury.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, sometime between midnight and 6:50 a.m. on Sunday, 6,000-8,000 minks got out of Richard H. Stahl Sons Incorporated located on State Route 890 in Rockefeller Township.

Two very big cats were seen in York County on Wednesday morning, police say.

Police in Spring Garden Township were sent to the 1100 block of Southern Road around 12:23 p.m. after a resident saw the two big cats in their yard, a press release says.

Uriah P. Groff, 22, of Lancaster, had videos saved on his phone when investigators searched through it on Monday, PSP said.

Another rare bird appears at central Pa. wildlife area, part of ‘mind boggling’ migration

Two weeks after the sighting of the limpkin in our region – a bird that, until recently, had never been seen as far north as Pennsylvania – another bird not usually found here has been spotted in the same area.

The hudsonian godwit was first spotted at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area in Clay Township, Lancaster County on July 19, according to the Lancaster County Bird Club. Portions of the wildlife management area also extend into Lebanon County.

Invasive spotted lanternflies are back and could be here to stay

The spotted lanternfly is back for another season, and it appear all signs are pointing to this invasive species staying in the U.S. for good.

Entomologist Mike Raupp, professor emeritus at the University of Maryland who is also known as “The Bug Guy,” said after stowing away on cargo and arriving in Pennsylvania back in 2014, these insects have spread to 14 states, including Maryland and Virginia.

North central Pa. leads state in 2022 bear seasons

The north central region of Pennsylvania, which includes McKean, Potter, Elk and Cameron counties, produced the most black bears in the 2022 hunting seasons.

A total of 1,028 bears were taken in the region; they were among 3,170 taken overall, the Pennsylvania Game Commission reported on Monday. That was down from the 3,621 in 2021, but still enough to rank the harvest as the 14th largest all-time.

No silly — I don’t mean that little shack behind the house with the mowers and shovels in it. I am referring to shed antlers. You know, those awesome eye-catching pieces of bone that grow on the heads of such fascinating critters as whitetail deer and elk.

Why shed hunting? I think the real question should be why not. I am willing to bet that like most folks, you overdid it on the holiday goodies and have been lounging around thinking you will get back in shape when warmer weather arrives. Why wait? Adoption event held for rats illegally dumped in Dauphin County

SUSQUEHANNA, Pa. — More than 120 rats were up for adoption during an event at Abrams & Weakley General Store for Animals, on Saturday. Those rats and hundreds more were illegally dumped in Dauphin County over two months ago.

“Honestly, I did not think there would be that many rat people in Harrisburg,” said Bethany Pascoe, an adoption coordinator.

Animals killed in fire that destroyed central Pa. wildlife rescue

The Red Creek Wildlife Center in Schuylkill County was destroyed and many animals killed in a Monday morning fire, officials confirmed.

Red Creek lost its main clinic in Schuylkill Haven and all of the animals housed there during a “catastrophic” blaze, the rescue wrote on Facebook.
