A national watchdog group recently scored some Central Pennsylvania hospitals below average for safety metrics, including death from serious treatable complications, infection, and having enough specially trained doctors to care for patients in the intensive care unit.

The Leapfrog Group is a nonprofit organization that provides ratings and safety data for hospitals, and it recently released grades for nearly 3,000 short-term, acute care hospitals across the country. The organization updates grades twice each year, once in the spring and once in the fall.

PA’s Safest Hospitals: Fall 2023 Leapfrog Group Ratings Released

Hospitals in Pennsylvania and nationwide made significant improvements in preventing a “disturbing” increase in hospital infections during the coronavirus pandemic, The Leapfrog Group said with the release Monday of its Fall 2023 Hospital Safety Grades Report.

The Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit health care watchdog group, used an academic grading scale with five letter grades to score nearly 3,000 hospitals nationwide on how well they prevent medical errors, accidents and infections.

Nurses from across Pa. call for action on bill that would set staffing minimums in hospitals, other health care facilities

Nursing advocates were in Harrisburg Tuesday urging lawmakers to pass the Patient Safety Act, or House Bill 106, a bill that would institute minimum nurse-to-patient ratios for hospitals as well as other measures that advocates say would help address the current nurse workforce crisis.

“When staffing is not appropriate or safe, basic needs like bathing, toileting, eating, and even drinking cannot be met, especially when a patient is relying on you to assist with those needs,” said Denelle Weller, a nurse from Central Pennsylvania.

Geisinger Health Plan’s provider network now includes UPMC in south-central PA

DANVILLE, Pa. – Geisinger Health Plan (GHP) announced that University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) hospitals and providers in south-central Pennsylvania have joined its provider network.

The new agreement, which went into effect Oct. 1, makes UPMC providers in Dauphin and Cumberland counties — including UPMC Harrisburg, UPMC Community Osteopathic and UPMC West Shore — in-network providers for GHP members.
