A national watchdog group recently scored some Central Pennsylvania hospitals below average for safety metrics, including death from serious treatable complications, infection, and having enough specially trained doctors to care for patients in the intensive care unit.

The Leapfrog Group is a nonprofit organization that provides ratings and safety data for hospitals, and it recently released grades for nearly 3,000 short-term, acute care hospitals across the country. The organization updates grades twice each year, once in the spring and once in the fall.

Central PA hospitals seeing early spike in RSV cases

Respiratory syncytial virus, more commonly referred to as RSV, is a respiratory virus that people of all ages can get sick with but young children and the elderly are especially vulnerable.

“A lot of kids in the hospital right now,” UPMC Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. John D. Goldman told CBS 21 News’ Samantha York. He says the reason for that is RSV. While it’s not uncommon to get RSV this time of year, local hospitals are seeing far more patients with it than they typically do.

Patients awaiting organ transplants can leave troubled central Pa. program, but keep waiting list spot

People who were awaiting kidney or liver transplants from Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center can switch to a different transplant program without losing their time spent on the waiting list. Many have turned to the nearby kidney transplant program at UPMC Harrisburg Hospital.

Penn State Health’s kidney and liver transplant program has been inactive since April as it addresses assorted problems and implements plans for correction required by federal and state agencies.

Rite Aid and WellSpan Health partner to support patients

YORK and PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (WHTM) — Rite Aid and WellSpan Health are partnering up to share patient data.

The two companies say they will share data and insights in order to help close gaps in care and improve continuous services, increase immunizations, strengthen medication adherence, and promote in-store opportunities to educate customers on products and services that improve overall health and wellness.
