Meteor shower could brighten skies tonight

Skygazers could be in for a terrific show tonight and early tomorrow morning if conditions are just right for the projected tau Herculid meteor shower, NASA officials say.

The shower, if it’s visible, is expected to peak around 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, though forecasters warn it may not even happen if the comet’s debris doesn’t enter Earth’s atmosphere at high enough speeds.

Treasury returns Bronze Star to WWII veteran’s family

Lower Burrell, Pa. — A Bronze Star that was part of the state’s large trove of unclaimed property was returned to a veteran’s family after officials managed to track down the surviving heirs.

Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity returned the Bronze Star and other military memorabilia to the family of the late Frank Musto, a U.S. Army veteran who served his country in World War II, at a ceremony at VFW Post 92 recently.

Two tornadoes touched down in central Pa., National Weather Service confirms

The National Weather Service has confirmed that tornadoes touched down in at least two locations in south-central Pennsylvania on Friday, May 27.

According to reports from the NWS, investigators have confirmed the presence of damage from funnel clouds in Lancaster and Franklin counties.

Penn State Extension Grape and Wine Team to hold workshop at central Pa. winery

The Penn State Extension Grape and Wine Team is planning a spring vineyard management workshop on May 25 at Armstrong Valley Vineyards and Winery in Halifax, Dauphin County.

This in-person event, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., costs $20 to attend. Lunch is included.

Cain Hickey, the viticulture Extension educator, listed four goals for this late spring workshop:

Discuss best viticulture and pest management strategies as bloom (the start of the critical period for cluster disease management) approaches to optimize early season vine health, and set the stage for a successful ripening and harvest period.
Review cultivar, site, and vineyard design options.
Provide an opportunity for grower interaction and industry participation in the workshop.
Review spotted lanternfly research, management, and trends – within and beyond the vineyard.
