Heavy thunderstorms, power outages hit central Pa. Wednesday morning

Loud thunderstorms with heavy rain and lightning crossed central Pennsylvania early this morning, and power outages have been reported.PennLive.com

The National Weather Service in State College said the storms are starting to wind down as of 5:30 a.m. Affected areas include Perry, Lancaster, York, Adams, Cumberland, Lebanon and Dauphin counties.

Central PA has observed an unusually warm, wet spring. Has El Niño played a role?

Showers and even an occasional thunderstorm are back in the forecast for the State College area Wednesday, continuing what has already been a wet and gloomy start to the spring season.

Wednesday’s showers and storms are expected to produce around 0.2 inches of rain, and heavier amounts are possible if strong thunderstorms strike. Alex DaSilva, a long-range meteorologist at AccuWeather in State College, says the unusually wet spring is not unique to Centre County.

Cloudy and cooler today, occasional showers in south-central Pennsylvania

We’ll squeeze in a little sunshine this morning, before clouds gradually increase. Scattered morning showers will pass through the Susquehanna Valley, as a warm front approaches.

This afternoon, look for mostly cloudy skies, light southeasterly winds, and temperatures around 64 degrees. That’s much cooler than the 80 we had on Sunday and Monday, and the mid-70s yesterday! However, 64 is more seasonable for mid-April. Occasional showers are possible this afternoon and evening.

Thunderstorms possible Friday before a clearer weekend in central Pa.

After thunderstorms overnight, rain continues to fall in central Pennsylvania Friday morning but should move out for the start of the weekend

The National Weather Service in State College says the Harrisburg area will likely see showers, and maybe thunderstorms, this morning. There’s less of a chance of rain the rest of the day. It’s also windy, with gusts as high as 36 mph.

Partly to mostly cloudy for the eclipse in south-central Pennsylvania

As the eclipse begins shortly after 2 p.m., we’ll see partly to mostly cloudy skies. A stray shower is possible this afternoon, with temperatures in the mid-60s. During max eclipse around 3:21 p.m., temperatures may fall degree or two, and sunlight will be dimmed, but it won’t be dark. As the eclipse ends, look for breaks in the clouds.

Tonight, clouds clear, as the warm front moves north. Lows will be mild, in the mid-40s.

Thousands without power in northeastern and central Pennsylvania

Rain, flooding and downed wires and trees have left thousands of customers without power in northeastern and central Pa.

According to various power companies in ourarea, at around 1 p.m. Wednesday, over 10,000 customers were without power in our area.

Warm Monday, rain returns tonight in south-central Pennsylvania

We’ll see a mix of clouds and sunshine this afternoon, leading to highs around 64 degrees, our warmest day of the week. Today’s average high is 47.

Tonight, low pressure will move up the East Coast, and light rain will develop from south to north.

Rain will continue during the Tuesday morning commute, before wrapping up Tuesday afternoon. Highs will be cooler, in the low 50s, but still above average. Some clearing is possible toward evening.

Central Pa.’s first snowstorm of the season is predicted to come this weekend

The first weekend of 2024 is expected to be a cold and snowy one in Central Pennsylvania.

Forecasters say a potentially big snowstorm will hit the East Coast on Saturday and Sunday, bringing between 4 inches to over 1 foot of snow.

It’s not yet clear how the storm could affect Central Pennsylvania.

Philadelphia area expected to have even cooler temperatures Monday

Fall is certainly in the air and there was no doubt that it felt like it on Sunday. The truth is, the high temperature Sunday afternoon of 61 degrees was more in line with the normal high temperature of early November than early October.

Temperatures will remain unseasonably cool to start the week with temperatures overnight Sunday returning to the mid 40s across the Delaware Valley and even some upper 30s in the Poconos. The normal low temperature in Philadelphia for this time of year is 52 degrees.

Tracking Hurricanes Idalia, Franklin | No impacts expected in Central Pa.

 Right on schedule, the tropics are heating up with two hurricanes we’re keeping our eyes on. Fortunately, no impacts are expected in Central Pennsylvania from either storm.

Idalia strengthened into a hurricane early Tuesday morning as it entered the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. This storm is forecast to rapidly intensify to a major category 3 hurricane as it approaches the Florida coastline.
