Central PA community partners looking to tackle veteran homelessness

According to data from the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs Office, U.S. military veterans make up a significant portion of all homeless adults across the country, 11 percent to be exact.

Veterans Outreach of Pennsylvania (VOPA) board member, Deborah Donahue said in the Harrisburg area, on any given day, around 35 veterans are experiencing homelessness.

Volunteers pack 100,000 meals for veterans in Central Pa.

It was a lively afternoon at Giant Center in Derry Township, Dauphin County as about 500 Giant food stores volunteers filed into three big tents full of food ready to be packaged and delivered to families in need.

Organizers said it couldn’t come at a more critical time.

Central Pa. florist partners with Red Cross to spread holiday cheer to veterans

LANCASTER, Pa. — A local florist is making sure service members and veterans feel the support of the community this holiday season.

Royer’s Flowers and Gifts presented The American Red Cross with more than 3,600 holiday cards with messages of support today.

Veterans Day ceremonies, parades across Central Pa.

(WTAJ) — On, Thursday, Nov. 11, the country will be honoring the men and women of the U.S. military for their service and sacrifice.

Many communities across Central Pa. will be celebrating Veterans Day with parades and ceremonies. Here is a list of some events taking place in our area.

Altoona

The city of Altoona will host a Veterans Day parade on Saturday, Nov. 13 beginning at 10:30 a.m. A ceremony is also scheduled to take place after the parade at 11th Avenue & 14th Street at Robert E. Laws Veterans Mall. Monetary donations will also be accepted.

Bedford County

Bedford County will be celebrating Veterans Day with a ceremony and parade on Thursday, Nov. 11. The Bedford American Legion will host the ceremony in front of the Bedford County Courthouse at 11 a.m. The parade will take place on Juliana Street which will be closed from Penn Street to John Street starting at 10 a.m.

Central PA World War II veteran celebrates 100th birthday with drive-by parade

A Central Pennsylvania World War II veteran got a big surprise for his 100th birthday.

Community members celebrated John Gladfelter with a special drive-by parade.

Gladfelter was able to enjoy the parade from a safe distance while waving the American flag to those who passed him.

“He’s very caring and we’re glad that the community could come out and just share a special day with him,” said Shani Walters, granddaughter of John Gladfelter.

Pennsylvania Teen Will Escort WWII Veterans To Iwo Jima

The Young Marines, a national youth organization, named its Division 1 Young Marine of the Year – YM/SgtMaj Madysen Myers, 16, of Greensburg, Pennsylvania. She is a member of the Westmoreland County Young Marines. The unit meets in Greensburg. Myers is a junior at Greensburg Central Catholic High School.

Myers is the top Young Marine in Division 1 which includes seven states: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, and part of West Virginia. Over the course of the year, she will travel to other units throughout the division to lead, motivate, and serve as a role model.
