South central Pa. pilot program prepares students for green energy jobs

A pilot program in York graduated its second class of energy efficiency workers, who may help fill a growing need.

Pennsylvania’s energy efficiency workforce could grow from about 75,000 jobs now to 200,000, according to a study from the University of Massachusetts Amherst that looked at the possible impact of federal climate investments from the Inflation Reduction Act on job growth.

Black Women in Aviation holds workshop for Central PA students

The first female mechanic maintenance technician at John F. Kennedy International Airport is sharing her love of aviation with young minds in Central PA.

Her organization, Black Women in Aviation, held its first annual future aviator workshop over the weekend.

The 24 participating students from all over the area got an exclusive tour of the airport, a corporate aircraft and a private hangar.

PA students gain hands-on experience in watershed conservation

It is almost time for some Pennsylvania students to get out of the classroom and into a canoe.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Pennsylvania Rivers and Streams Environmental Education Program is for students in grades 4-12. It takes place in the spring and fall.

Kassie Fenn, student leadership and education coordinator for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in Pennsylvania, said the program is mobile, so students meet up with educators for field trips to explore waterways in their communities. She pointed out it is a way to boost critical thinking skills and connect children to their local ecosystems.

Four Central Bucks Students Nominated for U.S. Military Academies

Four Central Bucks students have been nominated to U.S. military service academies including West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy.

The four are among 24 Bucks and Montgomery county students nominated by U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick.

In Reading, Shapiro announces $46.5 million free breakfast program for PA students

“When I look into the eyes of these young people, I see our future and see this as the wisest of investments we can make in a community that cares deeply for all of God’s children,” said Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

Shapiro and other officials visited Millmont Elementary School in Reading on Friday. During his visit, Shapiro held a ceremonial signing of the state’s budget bill, which includes a $46.5 million increase to provide universal free breakfast to Pennsylvania public school students.

It is home to four public multicampus institutions—Pennsylvania State University, the University of Pittsburgh, Temple University and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE)—in addition to Lincoln University, an HBCU, and a sprawling, decentralized network of community colleges. That’s not even counting the 129 private colleges.

24 Central Bucks Students Earn First Seal Of Biliteracy In The County

Almost 40 elementary schools have closed in rural north-central Pa. in the past decade. Here’s why.

At least 38 elementary schools in north-central Pennsylvania have closed over the past decade, forcing students and staff to adapt to more crowded schools, longer commutes, and larger class sizes.

Some of the districts hardest hit by these closures, many in shrinking rural areas of the state, cited student population decline as a reason for shutting down schools.

12 injured after apartment floor collapses near Pa. university, police say

A dozen people were injured when the second floor of an apartment building collapsed late Saturday in west central Pennsylvania, just over a mile from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, state police said.

Injuries “ranged from minor to serious” at the Elm by Traverse Commons apartment complex in White Township, in Indiana County, about 66 miles northeast of Pittsburgh, said Trooper First Class Clifford Greenfield, a spokesman for the state police. The complex advertises its apartments as off-campus housing for students of the nearby university; it was not yet known whether any of the injured were students.

Central Pa. school board rejects ‘Addams Family’ musical

A Central Pennsylvania school board last week voted against allowing high school students to perform “The Addams Family” musical next year, according to WITF.

School directors debated for about 30 minutes before the majority concluded that the musical promotes bad values and is inappropriate for families, the news outlet reported. Directors of Northern Lebanon School District, in a rural area just outside of Harrisburg, said they had issues with the musical’s dark themes, including scenes of violence and children smoking.

Pa. middle schoolers invited to enter National Civics Bee

Middle-school students in central Pennsylvania and throughout the state are encouraged to participate in the 2023 National Civics Bee.

In this first round of the contest, local middle school students will participate in an essay competition. Judges will then select 20 finalists to participate in the local competition: a live quiz event testing civics knowledge to be held April 17 in Centre County.
