More than 30 Pa. schools detected toxic ‘forever chemicals’ in their drinking water that exceed EPA standard

Chris Tomlinson said he and his wife were surprised and troubled to learn the drinking water at their daughter’s high school contained toxic PFAS chemicals.

In March, the Central Bucks School District emailed parents and staff at Central Bucks East High School to inform them the rural Doylestown school’s on-site well water was contaminated with the chemicals, and that they had a plan to remove them.

The solar eclipse means many central Pennsylvania schools are canceling classes or dismissing early

The eclipse set to cross over Pennsylvania Monday will mean no class or early dismissal for students in many school districts in central and northcentral Pennsylvania.

The eclipse will begin around 2 p.m., which is close to dismissal time for many schools. So, many districts in the path of the eclipse plan to close or operate on modified schedules.

Some Central PA schools will have an early dismissal on Monday for the solar eclipse

The solar eclipse is set to take place in PA on Monday between the hours of 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. However, the is right around the time that students are dismissed from school.

The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) gave guidance to school districts across PA allowing schools to decide whether they want to left students be dismissed early on Monday.

New budget takes ‘Level Up’ funding away from Central Pa schools

The 2023 budget in Pennsylvania has been finalized, the last code bills signed by Governor Josh Shapiro, but the language does not include a program designed to help underfunded school districts.

The Level Up program was not included in the education and fiscal codes. Even though it was a part of the original budget signed by the governor in July.

PA schools could soon be powered by sun as solar bill advances to Senate

Bipartisan legislation that proposes the installation of solar panels in schools across Pennsylvania awaits a vote in the state Senate.

The Solar for Schools bill aims to combat climate change and invest in education. Fewer than 2% of Pennsylvania’s nearly 7,000 schools are powered by solar energy.

Mick Iskric is superintendent of Steelton-Highspire School District, which has a 42-acre urban school campus that serves more than 1,300 students from low-income families. He explained that, after partnering with McClure Company to install solar panels, the district now sees a monthly credit on its electric bill.

Technical schools see increased enrollment, businesses struggle to hire skilled workers

YORK, Pa. — Technical schools in Central Pennsylvania say applications have gone up significantly over the last couple of years.

A report by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center showed that in the spring of 2022, nationwide enrollment at two-year institutions in construction trades increased by 19.3%
