Two Lancaster County buffet restaurants were voted by USA TODAY readers as two of the best in the country. If you’ve lived in Central Pennsylvania for long, the choices probably come as little surprise.

Shady Maple Smorgasbord, widely known as the largest buffet in the United States, featuring over 200 feet of Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking in a cafeteria-style setting, took first place.

2 Central PA theme parks voted among top 10 in America by USA TODAY readers

Pennsylvania theme parks received some love from USA TODAY readers, with both Hersheypark and Knoebels being voted in the 2024 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards in multiple categories.

Knoebels, in Elysburg and Hersheypark, in Hershey, were voted in as number two and number four best theme parks in the United States, respectively.

Central Pa. rental market ranked among most competitive in nation

Finding a rental unit in central Pennsylvania is no joke.

The region, which makes up Dauphin, Cumberland, Adams, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and York counties, is the most competitive small rental market in the nation, according to one report.

National online rental website Rent Cafe said those searching for rentals are faced with challenges finding suitable places due to slow apartment construction and consistently high occupancy rates.

Report: Central PA is eighth most polluted area in United States

Central Pennsylvania is the eighth most air polluted area in the U.S., according to the Guardian.

The Guardian is a newspaper based in Britain that describes itself as the world’s leading liberal voice.

Carlisle is among many densely populated areas in central Pennsylvania that the U.S. Census Bureau identifies as air pollution hotspots. Others are Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon and York.

North central Pa. leads state in 2022 bear seasons

The north central region of Pennsylvania, which includes McKean, Potter, Elk and Cameron counties, produced the most black bears in the 2022 hunting seasons.

A total of 1,028 bears were taken in the region; they were among 3,170 taken overall, the Pennsylvania Game Commission reported on Monday. That was down from the 3,621 in 2021, but still enough to rank the harvest as the 14th largest all-time.
