‘We are all family’: Central Pa. residents reflect on LGBTQ+ Pride

June is globally recognized as Pride month, a period dedicated to celebration, remembrance and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community. It can be a lively celebration of diversity and self-affirmation, encouraging people to promote equality, acceptance and respect for all.

Friday is the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, a pivotal event in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. It was sparked by a police raid on a gay bar, the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Patrons fought back against the raid on June 28, 1969, sowing the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Pride Festival of Central PA Embraces Inclusion and Respect

Eric Selvey has probably been asked more than 31 times why the Pride Festival of Central PA is held in July instead of June.

Selvey — who likens himself to Grover Cleveland because he’s serving his second stint as president — explains that it’s because they don’t want to compete for attendance with bigger Pride festivals in D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York. “And so the powers that be decided to move the festival to the last Saturday of July,” says Selvey, a 63-year-old optometrist.

Pride Month celebrations return to in-person events in central Pennsylvania

For the last two years, many LGBTQ Pride celebrations in central Pennsylvania have been canceled or held online because of the coronavirus pandemic. This summer, LGBTQ organizations are gearing up for in-person celebrations.
