‘We are all family’: Central Pa. residents reflect on LGBTQ+ Pride

June is globally recognized as Pride month, a period dedicated to celebration, remembrance and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community. It can be a lively celebration of diversity and self-affirmation, encouraging people to promote equality, acceptance and respect for all.

Friday is the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, a pivotal event in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. It was sparked by a police raid on a gay bar, the Stonewall Inn in New York City. Patrons fought back against the raid on June 28, 1969, sowing the LGBTQ+ rights movement.

LGBT Center of Central PA hopes new building will be a symbol of stability

As the LGBT Center of Central PA opens the door to its first-ever brick-and-mortar space, it marks the beginning of a new chapter filled with promise, permanence and a sense of home.

“We did not really have a central location. So, ironically, we were a center without a center,” said LGBT Center of Central PA board member Bradley Gebhart.

LGBT Center has new home in Harrisburg

The LGBT Center of Central PA’s 18-month search for a new home has ended. 

The center announced Tuesday the purchase of 1323 N. Front Street in Harrisburg as its new and permanent home. 

The 3,000 square foot building is in Midtown near Front and Verbeke, and accessible by bike, bus, car, or foot. The site is expected to host programs and events and serve as a hub for LGBTQ+ communities across Central Pennsylvania.

Pride Festival of Central PA Embraces Inclusion and Respect

Eric Selvey has probably been asked more than 31 times why the Pride Festival of Central PA is held in July instead of June.

Selvey — who likens himself to Grover Cleveland because he’s serving his second stint as president — explains that it’s because they don’t want to compete for attendance with bigger Pride festivals in D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York. “And so the powers that be decided to move the festival to the last Saturday of July,” says Selvey, a 63-year-old optometrist.

Pa. LGBTQ leaders create statewide advocacy organization

In an effort to advance LGBTQ inclusion in Pennsylvania, leaders from across the state formed Keystone Equality, a nonpartisan organization with a goal of organizing statewide LGBTQ advocacy initiatives.

The organization’s membership will accomplish this via community building within local, state and federal governments; and it will work to get LGBTQ community supporters elected, facilitate LGBTQ voter participation and convey to government officials that LGBTQ Pennsylvanians have political power.

How one man’s perseverance led a Pa. borough to adopt its LGBTQ non-discrimination ordinance

Twist the title of a popular jazz song from ‘day’ to ‘What a difference a gay makes.’ And you have Anthony Bullett.

Bullett spent nearly a decade pushing for an LGBTQ-inclusive ordinance in Huntington, Pa., the county seat of Huntingdon County, in north-central Pennsylvania.

His perseverance finally paid off  last Dec. 17, when the borough council voted 4-3 to adopt protections for employment, housing, and public accommodation. With that vote, Huntingdon joined the ranks of 57 other Pennsylvania municipalities that enacted such protections.

Bullet recently spoke to the Central Voice about his long-awaited accomplishment.
