Suburban Philly winery offers a ‘more intimate’ experience as customer preferences change

Chaddsford Winery in suburban Philly certainly has earned a spot as one of the producers that put the state on the wine map, locally and regionally.

It opened in 1983 and had 7,000 gallons of wine available to sell from the 1982 vintage, making it larger when it opened than half of the wineries that were operating in 2000, according to the book “Pennsylvania Wineries.”

Authors Linda Jones McKee and Richard Carey noted that Eric and Lee Miller were the proprietors and both brought a wine background to their new business. Eric’s dad founded Benmarl Vineyards in New York’s Hudson Valley in 1969; it holds New York Farm Winery license No. 1. Lee had worked in advertising and published the “Pennsylvania Grape Letter and Wine News,” a bimonthly newsletter.
