Fall and winter food for wildlife could be sparse in some parts of Pennsylvania

Fall and winter foods for nut-eating wildlife, from squirrels to turkeys to deer and bear, will be limited across much of Pennsylvania this year, particularly south of Interstate 80, which divides the state into northern and southern zones.

“White oak group acorns, including white oak and chestnut oak, will be very limited this year in many areas, particularly south of Interstate 80, due to the extremely late freeze event in May that killed the developing flowers,” noted Dave Gustafson, chief forester with the Pennsylvania Game Commission. “Farther north the oak flowers had not yet started to develop and came out after the freeze, so white oak group acorns may be more widely available in those areas.
