A code orange air quality alert is in effect for the following central Pa. counties today:
- Cumberland
- Dauphin
- Lancaster
- Lebanon
- York
Christine Ferreira said the alert is in effect due to warmer air aloft moving over colder air at the surface. With light winds, the air becomes stagnant and pollutants become trapped near the surface.
A code orange air quality alert means that air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups. Sensitive groups include children, people suffering from asthma, heart disease or other lung diseases, and the elderly. The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous activity or exercising outdoors.
