School, health experts discuss mental struggles for Pa. students

HARRISBURG — A statewide survey of Pennsylvania middle and high school students produced sobering results about their mental health: 40 percent feel sad and depressed most days, 19 percent considered suicide, and 11 percent made at least one attempt.

The 2021 Pennsylvania Youth Survey, or PAYS, collected the anonymous thoughts of more than 246,000 students in about 450 public and private schools about mental health, substance use and risk behaviors.
