Applications Open for Arts Festival Children and Youth Sidewalk Sale, Banner Competition

The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts has opened the 2024 application period for two of its signature events.

Applications will be accepted until June 14 for the Children and Youth Sidewalk Sale and the Banner Exhibition and Competition

Part of the Children and Youth Day that kicks off the festival, the sidewalk sale will be held on Wednesday, July 10, on South Allen Street in State College. The 58th annual Arts Festival takes place July 10-14 on the streets of State College and the Penn State campus.

Central Pennsylvania dance studios prepare April showcase to benefit Ukrainian children

Dance studios in South Central Pennsylvania are teaming up to raise money for Ukrainian children as the war nears the one-year mark.

The 2023 Releve Spring Showcase Benefit involves ten dance studios across Lancaster, Lebanon and York. The event will feature a collection of dances. All proceeds from the event will go towards providing medical care to Ukrainian children.

Erin Meixel, the child’s mother, called 911 for help on Monday, but says it was a sight to see.

Child poverty on the decline, but elderly poverty on the rise in Pennsylvania

In recent years, Pennsylvania has seen a divide in poverty among its population, with a decline in child poverty rates in nearly two dozen counties, but an increase in elderly poverty rates in almost a dozen counties.

According to data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey 5-year estimates, the child poverty rate in the state dropped from 21% in 2012-2016 to 17% in 2017-2021, though it remains higher than the overall poverty rate of 12.6%.

NeurAbilities Healthcare opened the treatment center earlier this month at 353 Markle Drive, Suite 4 in Swatara Township.

Caitlyn’s Smiles works with Central PA Kings to bring smiles to millions of children

58 children died from abuse last year, according to PA Department of Human Services

Harrisburg, Pa.— A newly-released report showed 58 children died from abuse last year, including 18 who died from violent deaths.

In releasing its annual Child Protective Services Report this week, the state Department of Human Services also showed that 52% (30) of those 58 deaths were caused through “lack of supervision.” Another 18 deaths, or 31%, were caused by “violent acts.”
