Lancaster County, PA — After a devastating outbreak of tornadoes ripped through six states over the weekend, organizations in central Pennsylvania are wasting no time getting boots on the ground in the disaster zone and serving survivors who need it.
“Everyone is right now thinking about ‘How can we help?’” Fannie Beiler tells CBS 21 News’ Samantha York. Beiler is on the Operations Team for Blessings of Hope, which has sent six truckloads of food to the disaster zone throughout the last three days. That’s two truckloads per day. “People just reacted immediately.”
“It’s absolutely devastating,” she says of the tornado that traveled more than 230 miles across the quad states in hour hours, leaving little behind. “I mean, people can’t find their family members, they can’t dig through the rubble.”
Beiler says, despite a CDL driver shortage, the organization has had no shortage of people volunteering to get behind the wheel to deliver help.
“The response for drivers has just been absolutely phenomenal,” Beiler adds. “We live in a great community where people care about other people, doesn’t matter what state it is.”
While her organization focuses on food distribution, Mennonite Disaster Service down the road is getting ready to send crews of 8-9 volunteers in the next 2-3 days. In the months to come, they’ll help rebuild but, first, they’ll assist survivors searching for personal items among the rubble.
